Gogo's Crazy Bones

These pocket-sized and pocket-money priced collectible toys are the must have craze with many children at the moment. However, Gogo's [sic] aren't new, they have been around in different forms since the 1990s and are inspired by the games children played with fragments of bones in Roman times.

To-day Gogo's are small, brightly coloured, plastic characters that are packaged with stickers so that you cannot see the contents. Children can play a variety of games with them. These games mainly involve throwing the characters around, which must at least in part explain their appeal.

There are 80 different characters, each available in 5 different colours. If that doesn't sound like a difficult enough collection to complete you'll be please to know that there are 5 additional designs that are really rare. A complete collection therefore comprises of 405 of these little figurines; and there will be 80 more characters released later in 2008.

Swapping and trading these toys is common place, with some toy shops organising their own swap meetings. With some Gogo's being more common than others, children across the country have attributed a certain market value to individual designs; resulting in a handful of figures being offered for one particularly coveted Gogo.

Children can make up their own games using the figures but there are a number popular games that are being widely played.

The Verdict

Gogo's offer relatively good value for money. The games you can play with them are great fun and very sociable. So, it comes without surprise that Gogo's are banned from schools; but it might be possibly because of the misplaced apostrophe. The characters themselves are very appealingly designed, bearing some resemblance to the popular collector's cult of Japanese vinyl toys.

Building a complete collection and filling the sticker album could be rather expensive; but without doubt Gogo's prove that the simplest toys often turn out to be the most popular with children.
